Longtime Medina newspaper to stop publishing

Rochester Business Journal
May 1, 2014

The Medina Journal-Register is closing, marking the first time the Orleans County community will not have a local paper in more than 100 years.

Publisher Diane Crowe announced Wednesday the newspaper will publish its final edition on May 30. It has a circulation of 1,500 and is published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In 1903 the then Daily Journal launched, merging in 1970 with the Medina Register to create the Medina Journal-Register.

The four employees were notified of the closing. A vacancy at the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal will be filled by a Medina Journal-Register employee, officials said in an article on the publisher’s website.  The move comes after efforts to improve the paper’s performance failed, Crowe said.

Subscribers will be offered subscriptions to the Lockport paper. Both papers are part of a Greater Niagara Newspapers group that includes the Tonawanda News and the Niagara Gazette.
