SWBR completes work on mausoleum project

SWBR Architects & Engineers P.C. has completed work on the new Riverside Cemetery Chapel of Peace Mausoleum on Lake Avenue. Construction on the $4.5 million project began in summer 2010.

The new mausoleum serves as the third and primary building within the cemetery’s mausoleum campus. The 14,000-square-foot-building features crypts for 2,100 caskets and 1,600 niches for cremation remains.

“The building design is based on two analogies – the solid, stone-clad crypts symbolize the physical container for earthly remains, while the tilted and tapered roof forms elevate above the crypts, symbolizing the release of the spirit,” Project Manager Peter DeBraal said. “The radial plan and tilted roof forms evoke the spread wings of a dove, the symbol of peace.”

A main focus of the project was sustainable design. The chapel and crypt viewing rooms will be lit during the day by sunlight, eliminating the need for artificial light and natural ventilation will eliminate the need for air conditioning during the summer. The building also features a storm water management system able to recharge local ground water supply.

SWBR has more than 70 employees at offices in Rochester and Syracuse. The company ranked first on Rochester Business Journal’s most recent list of architectural firms.
