RG&E completes $27M substation project

Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. has finished a $27 million construction of an electric substation in the High Falls District, company officials announced Tuesday.

The new Station 137 replaces outdated facilities on the 25-acre Beebee Station site, officials said. It will provide electricity to customers in the city of Rochester.

“The substation’s state-of-the-art technology enhances the reliability of our electricity service in the heart of Rochester, and its thoughtful design and construction help maintain the natural aesthetics of the High Falls District,” RG&E president Mark Lynch said in a statement.

The project included new transformers, relocating 20 new circuits and spares, a 43,000-square-foot switchyard and new cable ducts, and linking seven other substations to the new facility via cabling and high-speed communications links, officials said.

RG&E workers demolished some structures, removed various electrical equipment and cables, and removed two 280-foot brick chimneys to make room for the new facility, officials said.

The substation is hidden behind a decorative fence at Beebee Station, with low-noise, residential-type transformers, officials said. The company also built a public mini-park at the Mill Street entrance to High Falls.

RG&E is a subsidiary of Spanish power producer Iberdrola S.A.
