Rochester gets money for electric car charging stations

The city of Rochester is getting $228,000 to install 24 charging stations for electric vehicles, officials announced Wednesday.

The funding comes through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. It will result in charging stations at seven locations, including municipal parking garages, City Hall, the Port of Rochester and the Rochester Public Market, officials said.

Rochester is among 10 entities awarded a total of $4.4 million for 325 charging stations statewide.

“With New Yorkers facing higher prices at the pump, the state is stepping up to make owning an electric vehicle an affordable and convenient option,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.

“Creating an infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles will create jobs and new economic development across the state, while reducing our carbon footprint and helping protect the environment.”

The charging stations are the result of a joint effort by NYSERDA’s electric vehicle supply equipment demonstration program and the U.S. Department of Energy, officials said.

Proposals for a subsequent round of funding are due July 25, officials said.

NYSERDA also will be managing a $10 million fund with vouchers of up to $20,000 per vehicle for the purchase of electric commercial trucks of more than 10,000 pounds, officials said.
