Area schools honored on Forbes Top Colleges list

Several local college and universities have earned a slot on the Forbes list of America’s Top Colleges, an annual ranking of undergraduate institutions that focus on educational outcomes.

University of Rochester led all local institutions, ranking No. 100. Hobart and William Smith Colleges came in at No. 134, while Houghton College earned No. 317.

Also on the list were SUNY College at Geneseo, No. 322; St. John Fisher College, No. 440; and Rochester Institute of Technology, No. 551.

The list, which ranks the top 650 colleges in the nation, is compiled exclusively for Forbes by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity. The ranking focus on the things that matter the most to students, Forbes officials noted: quality of teaching, great career prospects, high graduation rates and low-levels of debt.

Rankings do not take into account a school’s reputation, the publication noted.

Princeton University ranked No. 1 on the list, taking the top spot for the first time since 2008.
