New York continues to be a leading agricultural state, with 36,300 farms producing $4.7 billion in products annually, a report from the state Comptroller’s Office shows.
New York ranks among the largest producers in the nation for some goods and is second in wine production.
The Finger Lakes region—defined in the report as Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties—accounted for nearly 30 percent of the state’s total farm sales. Wyoming County was the state’s largest producer of milk and corn silage or animal feed and Wayne County was first in apple production.
The region also is known for its 95 wineries, which are a major tourist attraction, the report states.
“While farming in New York is mainly a small, family business, its economic impact is widespread. We need to do all we can to make sure New York farmers can successfully continue their way of life,” State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said.
