Companies that hire long-term unemployed workers will be eligible for wage subsidies as part of a state initiative introduced this week.

New York will distribute $6 million in federal grants to companies that qualify, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Also, the state will deploy a mobile response team to assist individuals seeking work in high unemployment areas.

“With New York Works projects creating new jobs and supporting economic development all across the state, this initiative will help train workers and connect the unemployed with opportunities to launch a successful career,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The funds will provide wage subsidies to businesses that hire a new employee, the statement said. The Cuomo administration will partner with employers that have used the grants previously to hire long-term unemployed workers.

The federal money is New York’s second on-the-job training grant.
