Rochester-area bankruptcy filings continued a more than yearlong decline, statistics for September show.
The 134 cases filed last month in the Western District of New York’s nine-county Rochester division were down 26 percent from 182 cases filed in September 2011. The 1,654 bankruptcies filed in the division from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 showed a drop of 280 cases, from the 1,934 filed in the first nine months of 2011, a 14.5 percent decline.
The federal courts’ Rochester division includes the counties of Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, Chemung, Seneca, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates. September filings in the division included 83 Chapter 7 cases, 49 Chapter 13s and two Chapter 11 filings.
Chapter 7 filers petition the court to wipe out their debts by liquidating assets and paying creditors from the proceeds anywhere from zero to 100 percent of the amounts owed. Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 filers make plans to pay creditors all or part of amounts owed over time.
