Union workers to begin picketing at UR

Rochester Business Journal
October 5, 2012

Union workers at the University of Rochester plan to start picketing next week.

Contract talks came to halt last week over a university proposal to replace the workers’ health insurance with what the union says is an inferior and more expensive plan, Service Employees International Union officials said Friday.

SEIU represents some 1,800 health care and maintenance workers at the medical center and the River Campus. Two SEIU units at UR—1199 Healthcare Workers East and Local 200United—jointly have negotiated with UR since August. The union workers’ contracts expired Sept. 22.

Picketing is to start Oct. 12, the earliest date allowed under a federal labor law provision requiring unions to give management 10 days notice before mounting a picket line.

The UR’s annual Meliora Weekend takes place Oct. 11-Oct. 14.

I do not know the particulars of the contract issue, but remember there are at least 1800 men and women in Rochester who would love to get the opportunity to WORK and work at the UofR. Maybe a union strike might not be the best!

Chronic malcontents. They should be glad they're getting any sort of health insurance / benefits.
