After a bitter and costly race, Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter on Tuesday soundly defeated Republican Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks to win re-election in the newly drawn 25th Congressional District.

With 100 percent of districts reporting, the unofficial results showed Slaughter with 57 percent of the vote, and Brooks with 43 percent.

At 11:30 p.m., the 27th Congressional District race between Democratic Rep. Kathy Hochul and Republican opponent Chris Collins was too close to call. However, Hochul issued a statement at 2 a.m. Wednesday, saying, "Early this morning I called Chris Collins and congratulated him on being elected to Congress."

In the closely watched 55th state Senate contest, Democrat Ted O'Brien defeated Republican Sean Hanna in the race to fill the seat vacated by retiring Republican Sen. James Alesi.

Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo received nearly 60 percent of the vote to defeat Democratic challenger Susan Vandervoort.

In the race for the White House, President Barack Obama won nearly 58 percent of the vote in Monroe County, versus 40 percent for Republican challenger Mitt Romney. CNN declared Obama the winner shortly before 11:30 p.m.
