Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. and New York State Electric & Gas Corp. have been honored for their response to Hurricane Sandy, officials announced Thursday.
RG&E and NYSEG, along with Central Maine Power Co., were among the winners of Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Recovery Award and its Emergency Assistance Award for 2012. All are subsidiaries of Iberdrola S.A.
The awards, given to EEI member electric utility companies since 1998, were awarded Wednesday at EEI’s CEO meeting in Phoenix.
“These awards are a testament to the hard work and commitment of all of our employees who rapidly restored power to our customers and then moved on to help other utilities recover from Hurricane Sandy, one of the largest and most destructive storms in history,” Iberdrola CEO Robert Kump said in a statement.
The three utilities delegated 6,000 employees to handle nearly 500,000 electric service interruptions in Maine and New York, company officials said. After power was restored to customers, the three companies dispatched nearly 1,800 line, bucket, pole-setting, digger, tree, gas and supervisory employees to assist other utilities.
