Lakeside Health System replaces interim CEO

Lakeside Health System Inc. has replaced interim CEO Hugh Collins, naming its senior vice president, James Cummings, as acting CEO.

Collins is a consultant whom the financially ailing Brockport health system initially hired on a temporary basis last April to manage a turnaround. Among his first moves were job cuts and cutbacks, including a shutdown of Lakeside’s birthing unit. His departure after the Lakeside board voted in August to extend his contract for another 12 months.

Lakeside announced Collins’ early departure Thursday stating “Collins...has completed his work for the health system.”

A former chief operating officer and 17-year veteran of Guthrie Corning Hospital, Cummings came to Lakeside in 2006 as vice president of human resources. Areas he has managed for the Brockport health system include the hospital’s pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, occupational health, and physical plant services departments. He also directed Lakeside’s wellness program.

Lakeside’s leadership change comes roughly a week after Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic in Ontario County abruptly ended the tenure of its CEO of 18 years with no plans to search for a replacement. Management duties would be shared between the hospital’s medical director and nursing supervisor, the Clifton Springs Hospital board said.
