Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield handed out $26 million in quality improvement awards to 54 upstate hospitals last year, officials said Wednesday.

Targets for each of those measures are separately agreed on between Excellus and each hospital participating in the program. Some 300 criteria based on measures developed by health care organizations including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Group, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
