Rochester RHIO adds EMTs to network

The Rochester Regional Health Information Organization has added area emergency medical technicians to its network, officials said Tuesday.

Some 25 percent of 911 callers are treated by EMTs at the scene or refuse ambulance transportation.

By providing an electronic record of such pre-hospital treatments, “the (new) system affords the primary care or emergency department physician the opportunity to review the important events that transpired in the seconds and minutes following their patient’s call to 911,” said Jeremy Cushman M.D., Monroe-Livingston region emergency medical services director.

More efficient ED treatments would result in fewer hospitalizations, Cushman said. In addition, the availability of such records would ease the way for patients transferred from outlying community hospitals to a higher level of care at an urban institution.

Pre-hospitalization health information from 85 percent of the Monroe-Livingston County region is available on the system, Rochester RHIO executive director Ted Kremer said. The RHIO plans to extend the service across its 13-county region.

The Greece and Henrietta volunteer ambulance agencies, and their vendor, emsCharts, as well as area ED physicians helped develop the format for transmitting pre-hospitalization information, Kremer said.
