Geneseo warplane museum gets new name

A Geneseo museum dedicated to the history of warplanes is taking on a national stature.

The 1941 Historical Aircraft Group has reacquired the name of the National Warplane Museum, a step toward the museum’s larger plans to develop an Aviation Trail in Western New York.

The museum intends to create a link between the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo with the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, and on to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

“Operating under the national status elevates the awareness of our mission to refurbish, preserve and fly vintage military aircraft, as well as educate the public on the history of these artifacts and increase tourism, drawing visitors to our region,” said Austin Wadsworth, president of the National Warplane Museum. “Our goal is also to draw a greater focus for aviation enthusiasts, and grow the volunteer base and supporters.”

Founded in 1994, the National Warplane Museum is a non-profit museum dedicated to the restoration, preservation, display and flight of aircraft of the World War II and Korean War eras. The museum also recognizes all U.S. Military personnel for their service and sacrifice, officials noted.

In the summer the museum runs the Geneseo Airshow, which has been in operation for more than 30 years and is estimated to bring in more than $1 million to the local economy.
