WXXI, Jazz Festival partner on national programs

WXXI TV and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival have announced the four concerts at this year’s event that are to be produced into programming and distributed to Public Broadcasting Service stations nationwide.

The four concerts are The Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio, Gretchen Parlato, Ravi Coltrane Quartet and Gregory Porter. Each is part of the festival’s Kilbourn Series at Kilbourn Hall.

The concerts will be filmed and edited into four separate one-hour programs that will be sent to stations airing this year or in early 2013, festival officials said.

This is the sixth year WXXI and the Jazz Festival have partnered for such a project. The two previously joined forces to produce concert series in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012. The resulting programming has been seen on more than 200 stations, including air time in all top 20 markets, festival officials said.

“WXXI is proud to produce another series of programs from the festival,” said Norm Silverstein, president and CEO of WXXI Public Broadcasting Council, in a statement. “In sharing this series with millions of viewers across the country, WXXI looks to celebrate the cultural life of the region and help further elevate Rochester as a national center for music and the arts.”

This year’s Jazz Festival kicks off June 21. Festival officials said last year’s event drew more than 187,000 people.
