Racinos now back the state plan for casinos

The lobbying agent for the Finger Lakes Racetrack and Casino and eight other racinos in New York has changed course and will support the state’s proposal for upstate casinos.

The New York Gaming Association announced its support Thursday, citing the inclusion of tax parity for racinos if a casino is located nearby.

The inclusion of competitive tax parity keeps Finger Lakes, the Batavia Downs Casino and the Hamburg Casino at Buffalo Raceway as vital partners to state and localities, and significantly improves the legislation from earlier drafts, the association said.

The legislation requires the nine racinos to restrict their marketing, and prohibits them from calling themselves casinos and their video lottery terminals as slot machines.

The proposal is expected to be brought before voters as a referendum in November.
