RBJ earns three press awards

Rochester Business Journal
June 28, 2013

The Rochester Business Journal received three awards-one gold and two silver-in an annual competition among local and regional business publications in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The Alliance of Area Business Publications' 2013 gold award in the breaking news category went to the newspaper's staff for its coverage of Eastman Kodak Co.'s January 2012 bankruptcy filing. The coverage included Managing Editor Mike Dickinson's analysis of what led to the filing, "How Kodak lost its way," and reporter Will Astor's story on the legal issues, plus additional content. The judges praised the "masterful writing" and said "this deeply reported package ... goes beyond the news of the day by showing how Kodak missed opportunities over decades."
In the daily email category, the newspaper's staff earned a silver award for the RBJ Daily Report, which is delivered to readers each weekday afternoon. The email is a free, subscription-based product. The recognition marked the third straight year AABP honored the RBJ Daily Report.
The RBJ staff received a second silver award for the RBJ Commemorative Edition 1987-2012, a 112-page special supplement to the Oct. 12, 2012, weekly paper. The judges in the category of best ancillary publication said "this commemorative edition is slick, in the best sense of the work, and elegant." They praised the "strenuous editing" and noted that, when "confronted with the story of the year-Kodak's downfall-the writers, editors and designers all played an important role in making this story compassionate, analytical and informative."
The competition, which drew 573 entries from 44 publications, was judged by members of the University of Missouri School of Journalism faculty.
Los Angeles-based AABP is a non-profit organization representing nearly 65 local and regional business publications in the United States, Canada and Australia. Winners of its annual awards were announced June 22 at the group's summer conference in Nashville.
