A year ago, the hard numbers for the RBJ 75 showed varied performance among the area's leading companies and non-profit organizations. In 2012, the story was much the same.
Total employment for the RBJ 75 has edged upward, reaching 110,113 from 109,088-an increase of slightly less than 1 percent. Last year, the RBJ 75 posted a 0.2 percent decrease. The area's top non-profit organizations employ 63,310 people, up 5.3 percent from 60,107 last year. The private-company workforce is little changed, slipping 14 people to 28,853 from 28,867. The public companies have declined 10.8 percent, however, again largely due to downsizing at Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. They now employ 17,950 versus 20,114 a year ago.
Total sales for the public companies fell by 4.8 percent to $41.3 billion. Their aggregate bottom line also slid, dropping 31 percent to $1.5 billion from $2.2 billion in the prior year.
The trend with annualized total returns brightened, however. In 2011, only six of the public companies posted positive one-year returns. In 2012, 10 of the public companies delivered positive returns to shareholders.
