Canandaigua contractor to pay IRS after tax evasion conviction

Rochester Business Journal
July 31, 2013

A Canandaigua paving contractor has been convicted of tax evasion and ordered to pay $123,628 to the Internal Revenue Service, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

The sole owner and operator of Richard’s Paving, Richard Williams had customers pay with checks made out to him personally. He then cashed the checks at his customers’ banks, gave the banks phony social security numbers and neglected to report his paving earnings as income, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley Tyler said.

Williams was convicted of evading taxes owed for the 2010 tax year after an investigation by the IRS’ Criminal Investigation Division. In addition to the financial penalty, he drew three years’ probation.
