The city of Rochester is looking for a construction firm to begin work at the Port of Rochester marina this fall, and a developer for nearby neighborhood, officials announced Wednesday.
The city began advertising for bids on the marina project Monday. Construction is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2015, officials said.
The first phase of the project is expected to cost $16.5 million, with future work bringing the total cost to $20 million, officials said.
It also has issued a request for qualifications for development proposals to convert public lands between North River Street and Lake Avenue into commercial and residential properties in the city’s new Marina District.
The idea of a marina and private developments at the Charlotte port and its surroundings was introduced 48 years ago with the Genesee River Plan of 1965 under Mayor Frank Lamb.
“It was a good idea then, and it is an even better idea now,” Mayor Thomas Richards said. “Today I am humbled and honored to say this idea is finally coming to fruition.”
Marina construction will include a project labor agreement with local trade unions.
The project’s first phase includes construction of a deep-draft marina basin to accommodate 85 slips south and west of the ferry terminal. The design calls for up to 72 more slips in the future.
The request for qualifications is for the development of 2.8 acres, possibly to include condominiums with rights to marina slips, retail and commercial space, and even a hotel.
