Record-tying 63 gives Dufner two-shot lead at PGA Championship

Rochester Business Journal
August 9, 2013

Jason Dufner set a new competitive course record at Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course and tied the all-time low score in a major championship Friday, shooting a 63. His historic round gave him a two-shot lead after two rounds at the 95th PGA Championship. (Click here for video of Dufner.)

It was the 26th time that a 63 has been shot in a major golf championship. Dufner's 131 through two rounds matches the 36-hole scoring record in the PGA Championship.

Two strokes back are Adam Scott, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar. Scott (click here for video) and Furyk shared the lead after Thursday's first round.

Dufner eagled the par-4 second hole and birdied Nos. 4, 5, 11, 13 and 16. Two years ago, Dufner shared the lead after the second and third rounds but lost in a playoff to Keegan Bradley.

Dufner said he knew he was "chasing history."

"I don't think I've been the first to do anything in my life," he said. "So it was a little nerve-wracking for a Friday. It's usually the pressure you might feel towards the end of the tournament. But I got through it. I made a couple of pars, and I wish I had that putt on the last hole back again."

A total of 75 players survived the 36-hole cut, which fell at 3-over-par 143. By contrast, the 36-hole cut at the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill was at 8-over-par 148.

Seven former PGA champions remain in the field after the cut. Martin Kaymer, who won in  2010, has back-to-back 68s and is tied for ninth at 4-under-par 136. Defending PGA Champion Rory McIlroy (69-71) and David Toms (71-69) are tied at even par.  (Click here for video of McIlroy.) Other former PGA champions who made the cut are Keegan Bradley (69-72), Tiger Woods (71-70), Phil Mickelson (71-71) and Vijay Singh (70-72).

Woods acknowledged the challenge facing him heading into the weekend.

"I'm going to have do my job and shoot a good round," he said. "But also, then again, I'm so far back that if the leaders go ahead and run off with it and shoot a low one tomorrow, I'm going to be pretty far behind. I have got to do my job tomorrow and go out there and post something in the mid- to low-60s, like some of the guys did today."

Rain continued to soften the East Course, contributing to the low scores. PGA officials said 0.3 inches of rain fell on Oak Hill Friday morning before skies cleared. Total rainfall since Thursday reached 0.67 inches.

Notes from Round 2:

  • Angel Cabrera withdrew during the second round of the 2013 PGA Championship, due to a left wrist injury.
  • During the second round, Woody Austin was assessed a four-stroke penalty for exceeding the 14-club limit. On the third hole, Austin discovered he had 15 clubs in his bag. He declared the extra club out of play and reported the transgression to a rules official when he finished the third hole. Under the rule, “The player must not start a stipulated round with more than 14 clubs.” The penalty is two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred, with a maximum penalty of four strokes. Austin added two strokes to his score for the first and second holes. He finished the round with a 75, and a two-day score of 144.
  • EagleView Technologies Inc. said it recently captured high-resolution aerial images of Oak Hill Country Club in preparation for this week’s PGA Championship. The merged company of EagleView and Pictometry International Corp. provided the images to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to aid in security for the event.
