RGHS to dedicate outpatient surgery center Thursday

Rochester General Health System plans a 10 a.m. dedication Thursday in advance of its expected kickoff of a new outpatient surgery center later this month.

The same-day surgery center—slated to begin accepting patients Oct. 22—has been in the works since RGHS began developing its Linden Oaks Medical Campus in March 2012 with the $40 million purchase of four buildings at the eastern Monroe County suburban office park.

The ambulatory campus is needed to accommodate a shift in care as medical and technological advances and pressure from third party payers to cut hospitalizations have moved procedures such as cataract surgery from inpatient to outpatient settings, RGHS officials said.

The 29,000-square-foot surgery center at 360 Linden Oaks Dr. is meant to be the eastside medical campus’ centerpiece. Its features include six 500-square-foot operating rooms upsized to accommodate extra equipment needed for modern procedures and two minor-procedure operating rooms.

The addition of outpatient surgical capacity would ease pressure on Rochester General Hospital’s operating rooms, which have of necessity done double-duty as venues for inpatient and outpatient procedures as demand outstripped the capacity of the hospital’s four ambulatory operating rooms, RGHS CEO Mark Clement told the Rochester Business Journal last year.

Other facilities at the Linden Oaks Campus include orthopedics, podiatry and primary-care offices and an imaging center.
