Wegmans, union workers reach tentative agreement

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. and union truckers and warehouse workers have reached a tentative agreement over stalled contract talks.

The supermarket chain and some 900 International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 118 member have been involved talks over renewal of a pact that expired last spring for several months. The two sides came to terms after restarting talks last Friday and concluding them over the weekend, Wegmans officials said.

A central disagreement has been the union’s pension fund, which Wegmans proposed pulling out of and putting Teamsters into a company sponsored retirement plan.

Neither side is releasing details of the tentative agreement.

The tentative pact still must survive a vote by the fractious local.

Local 118’s elections were suspended after International Teamsters president James P. Hoffa, citing “political infighting tainting the reputation of not only the local but of all Teamsters in the area,” put the 5,000-member Rochester-area local into a trusteeship last year.
