WXXI-AM 1370 has hired Evan Dawson away from WHAM-TV 13 to host its midday talk show, the station announced Tuesday.

Dawson fills the position held by Bob Smith, who retired in August after suffering a stroke last spring. Smith produced and hosted 1370 Connection from noon to 2 p.m. weekdays.

“Evan will bring a fresh voice and new perspective to the talk show,” said Norman Silverstein, president and CEO of WXXI, in a story posted on the public broadcasting station’s website.

“And he’ll make a great addition to a news department that is invested in providing in-depth news on issues that concern our community.”

Dawson co-anchored WHAM’s morning news show for the last six years. He was hired as a reporter in 2003.

Dawson begins his new job in January 2014.
