The University of Rochester Medical Center has been awarded $2.1 million for a project studying how to reduce disparities and improve empowerment among HIV patients.

The grant came from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for one of 82 proposals intended to advance the field of patient-centered comparative effectiveness research and provide patients with information to make better-informed decisions about their care.

The project at URMC includes HIV patients, doctors and HIV organizations to study the impact of an interactive training program for patients.

“This project was selected for PCORI funding not only for its scientific merit and commitment to engaging patients and other stakeholders, but also for its potential to fill an important gap in our health knowledge and give people information to help them weigh the effectiveness of their care options,” said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby.

Kevin Fiscella M.D. is principal investigator on the project and leads the team.
