U.S. agency orders $18 million worth of RF radios

Harris Corp.’s RF Communications division in Rochester has received orders totaling $18 million for its manpack and handheld tactical radios from the U.S. Special Operations Command.

The orders were received during the second quarter of fiscal 2014.

The federal agency is acquiring more radios as it expands deployment of a wideband tactical communications network. The network enables operators to send and receive tactical voice, video and data, resulting in enhanced situational awareness and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, company officials said.

“Harris Falcon III wideband radio systems are delivering the tactical Internet to the battlefield,” said George Helm, president of RF Communications’ Department of Defense business unit, in a statement. “This new network is opening up a world of new combat applications, such as collaborative chat, biometric enrollments, video conferencing and video (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance).”
