Carestream inks contract with Johns Hopkins

Carestream Health Inc. scored a contract to supply the Johns Hopkins Health System with a picture archiving system.

The deal with the Baltimore medical organization whose Johns Hopkins Hospital has won top ranking among U.S. hospitals from U.S. News and World Report 21 times, is a coup for Carestream, which won the bid over far larger competitors such as General Electric Cos. GE Healthcare Worldwide division and Siemens A.G.’s Siemens Healthcare USA division, said Diana Nole, Carestream president of digital medical solutions.

Carestream’s new Vue PACS product, which uses unique proprietary technology that can quickly correlate data from different imaging sources, was designed with large, multi-site medical organizations involved in complex care, Nole said.

That an institution of Johns Hopkins caliber would switch from previously employed imaging software to the newly developed Carestream product would be noticed by other top providers, she believes.

A key feature that convinced Johns Hopkins to go with the Carestream product was Vue PACS’ ability to let doctors bookmark cancerous lesions and automatically register 3D images from sources such as MRI and CT scanners, Nole said. The system can also can help optimize mammography exams by displaying images from a complete range breast imaging sources on a single PACS workstation.

The Carestream picture archiving system will initially be used by Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and two outpatient imaging centers.
