The University of Rochester is the eighth-largest private employer in New York and a major driver of economic activity in the region, a new report from the Center for Governmental Research Inc. states.
The report, released Thursday, shows UR has roughly 22,000 full-time equivalent employees in New York. Wegmans Food Markets Inc. ranked as the state’s No. 12 employer with 17,000 full-time equivalent employees.
The largest private employers in the state were the North Shore-LIJ Health System and Mount Sinai Health System, with 40,000 and 31,000 full-time equivalent employees.
CGR on Thursday released a full report on the economic impact of UR, finding that the university attracts an average of $407 million per year in external grant funding, a number expected to more than double over the next 10 years with the launch of the Institute for Data Science.
The report found that in 2013, UR paid more than $1.5 billion in wages, spent an average of $241 million per year on capital projects and purchased $196 million in goods and services in the Rochester Metropolitan Area.
