Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks publicly opposed a once-proposed casino in the town of Henrietta on Friday.

Brooks also wrote a letter stating her opinion to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In the letter, Brooks states that after speaking with town residents, as well as business and government leaders, she feels a casino in Henrietta is not in the best interest of the community.

In early March, Seneca Gaming Corp. announced the purchase of roughly 32 acres on Clay Road in Henrietta as a potential site for an entertainment facility with a casino. The corporation said it was working with local developer David Flaum on the project.

The news prompted mixed public reviews, with some opposed to such an operation on a variety of grounds and others touting its economic benefits.

On May 8, Seneca Nation President Barry Snyder wrote a letter to Monroe County Legislator Justin Wilcox informing him the group was no longer interested in building a casino in Henrietta.

In a statement Friday, the Seneca Nation said, “Nothing has changed. While the timing of the county executive's statement is curious, our position remains as it was two months ago."

Seneca Gaming operates Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel in Salamanca and Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino in downtown Buffalo.
