In December, I spent time in Costa Rica, a country with some of the most beautiful landscape-and most awful roads-I've ever experienced. On a Friday morning there, I stepped outside to take in the view of Lake Arenal, a serene, sparsely populated spot in the northern highlands.
Then I pulled out my smartphone, opened an email message and clicked on a link. Soon, up popped the new weekly edition of the Rochester Business Journal-exactly as our subscribers would see it in print that day.
I could have been in Europe, in Asia or back in Rochester-anywhere with Internet access, which these days is almost everywhere. No need to wait until I returned home or, when in town, even to wait for the mail.
The same is true for you. All subscribers to our weekly print newspaper can access the Digital Edition--at no extra cost. This online version is a true replica; it contains all the stories, lists, photos and ads exactly as they appear in the print edition, yet it is viewable in a rich-media framework.
Reading our weekly paper on my 2-year-old smartphone isn't my first choice. These days, I typically read the paper-while at home or away-on a more recent acquisition, my iPad; it's crisp, bright and easy to navigate.
If you have not tried our weekly Digital Edition, let me answer some questions you might have:
Other than allowing me to read the paper when I'm out of town, what are the advantages? For starters, you can access the Digital Edition before the print edition arrives in the mail. The digital version usually is accessible by 5 a.m. Here are some other advantages:
Do I need to buy or download an app from the iTunes store or Android Market? No. The Digital Edition uses a Web-based application; tablets and other mobile devices access an HTML5 version that works equally well on iOS, Android and other systems.
How do I access the Digital Edition? Before dawn each Friday, we send an email with a Digital Edition link to all subscribers for whom we have an address. Look for a subject line like "RBJ Today: 4/20/12 print preview and digital edition."
I don't recall ever receiving an "RBJ Today" email. Most likely, that's because we don't have your email address in our database. To get set up, call our Circulation Department at (585) 546-8303 or email email@example.com.
What's the difference between the Digital Edition and your website, RBJdaily.com? The main focus of our website is daily news. The content of our weekly print edition--minus photos and ads--is archived at RBJdaily.com, but not until a week after publication. To get all the weekly paper has to offer, you need to read either the digital or print edition.
Speaking of daily news, do you have a mobile app for it? Not one you need to download. Instead, our website is mobile-friendly; it recognizes smartphone users and automatically redirects to a stripped-down version that's easy to read on a phone or PDA. If you want to go to the full site, there's a link at the bottom of the page.
I've heard a lot lately about paywalls on the Democrat and Chronicle and other news websites. Are you planning to charge for access to RBJdaily.com? No. Accessing our full website will remain free of charge. And though we think the Digital Edition significantly increases the value of a subscription to the weekly newspaper, we have not hiked the subscription cost.
