Many cellphone users in Rochester should see faster service by the end of this year.

AT&T Inc. announced Thursday it plans to roll out its 4G LTE service in Rochester by the end of 2012. 4G LTE is considered the industry standard for high-speed mobile Internet use.

Verizon Wireless Inc., AT&T’s biggest competitor, has spent much of this year expanding its 4G LTE coverage in Rochester and the Upstate New York region. Verizon Wireless also announced Thursday it has expanded its 4G LTE coverage at sites in Rochester, Bristol, Chili, Lyons and Williamson.

“People everywhere are increasingly relying on their tablets, smartphones and apps to stay organized, connected and entertained,” said Gene Fassett, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless in Upstate New York, in a statement. “Our investment here in Upstate New York and across the country has kept us ahead of this consumer trend and underscores our belief that 4G LTE delivers the best value to customers by maximizing the performance of their wireless devices.”

Both Verizon and AT&T officials said LTE, which stands for long term evolution, is capable of delivering speeds faster than many other mobile Internet technologies. The service makes it easier for cell phone or tablet users to stream, download and upload through the Internet.

“Rochester enjoys AT&T’s fast 4G speeds today as part of the nation’s largest 4G network, and our teams will be working hard across the city toward upcoming 4G LTE launch,” said Marissa Shorenstein, president of AT&T’s New York division. “AT&T customers in Rochester can look forward to even faster speeds this year, on our leading lineup of smartphones, tablets and other devices.”
