Webster Comfort Care Home Inc. operates a two-bed home for the dying in the town of Webster, seeking to provide comprehensive and compassionate hospice care. The organization's goal is to provide comfort care, symptom control and pain management for residents while also supporting their families.
Webster Comfort Care serves people who are in the final three months of terminal illness, as determined by a physician. The home's residents receive hands-on care around the clock, as well as meals and laundry service. Volunteers, nurses and social workers also provide companionship and emotional, social and spiritual support. All services are provided without charge to the residents.
The organization also offers training classes for volunteers and other people who want to learn about hospice care.
The organization was founded because of a suggestion from the staff of a similar home in Wayne County, where a Webster resident volunteered. The Wayne County home often had to turn away Webster residents because its priority was to serve people who lived nearer, so the staff suggested opening a comfort care home in Webster.
The volunteer and friends at a Webster church explored the idea, enlisting the help of people with legal, non-profit and medical experience. The group eventually became the corporation's board of directors, planning and raising money for the project. Community support snowballed, the group found land for construction, and Schantz Homes Inc. took on the project, agreeing to build the home and organizing support from specialized contractors and building material suppliers.
The completed home received its first residents in February 2003. Since then, Webster Comfort Care's nursing staff and volunteers have served more than 250 terminally ill people.
