The Webster Community Chest Inc., incorporated in 1948, serves people in need and assists community organizations in the Webster area, ZIP code 14580.
The organization's services include weekly food distribution and emergency assistance through its Webster Food Cupboard, as well as distribution of food baskets at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The community chest also provides onetime financial awards to help residents in emergencies, and it awards "scholarships" that enable children to enjoy summer recreation.
Each year the organization honors a college-bound student from each of Webster's two public high schools by presenting the Shirley Miller Award, a scholarship recognizing young people who have performed significant community service. The award is named for the organization's former benefits counselor of nearly three decades. The community chest also makes grants to an array of public-benefit and charitable organizations in the Webster area.
The most important source of funds for the Webster Community Chest is its annual fund drive, currently under way, which solicits monetary donations from individuals and businesses. It also relies heavily on volunteer workers and donations of food for the food cupboard. It receives no funds from the town or other government sources.
In recent years, the chest has distributed more than 200,000 pounds of food to Webster families. During 2011, it responded to more than 2,000 calls. The food cupboard served more than 600 people who made 2,346 visits to the regular Tuesday distribution and 132 emergency visits. The chest distributed 221 holiday food baskets and provided Christmas gifts for 60 children. It funded summer recreation for 32 children. Forty-five families received emergency financial help.
The organization has two part-time employees, its benefits counselor and secretary. The office is at the Webster Town Hall, 1000 Ridge Road, and the website is www.webcommchest.org.
