The Pluta Cancer Center officially is part of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
URMC and Pluta inked an agreement calling for Pluta to affiliate with URMC in July. The pact formally was concluded last month with final approvals from the state attorney general and state courts, URMC and Pluta officials said last week.
At one time part of Genesee Hospital, Pluta relocated to Henrietta after Genesee shut down in 2000 and struck out on its own, becoming the state’s only independent, freestanding cancer treatment facility. As part of URMC’s James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, its operations are unchanged, officials said. Pluta’s medical and administrative staff continue to run the center with medical staff joining URMC’s more than 900-physician Medical Faculty Group.
“We’re delighted to become part of the URMC family,” said Kelly McCormick-Sullivan, president and CEO of Pluta Cancer Center. “The transition will be almost seamless and invisible to our patients as they will continue to receive care from the same physicians, nurses and radiation therapists at Pluta, yet benefit from the unique strengths of the Wilmot Cancer Center clinical and research programs.”
Pluta has long pointed to its status as a relatively small, independent facility as a plus allowing it to give patients personalized approach to cancer care. Its affiliation with the Wilmot Center would not change that approach, URMC officials promised.
“Our commitment is to work with Pluta Cancer Center physicians, nurses, radiation therapists and staff to ensure that their patients continue to receive the high quality care and exceptional service that has long been Pluta’s hallmark,” said Jonathan Friedberg M.D., acting director of Wilmot Cancer Center.
While it would leave Pluta’s day-to-day operations unchanged, an affiliation with an academic medical center would give Pluta patients better access to clinical trials and research, URMC CEO Bradford Berk M.D. said.
