Clifton Springs Hospital cuts 58 positions

Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic announced Friday it has reduced its workforce by 58 full-time equivalent positions.
The cuts were done in preparation for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the potential reduction in reimbursements that may come as a result, hospital officials said.

“We expect that, under the Affordable Care Act, physicians and hospitals will be further incentivized, through changes to their reimbursements, to keep their communities healthier and provide more service in the home and outpatient settings,” said Lewis Zulick M.D., Clifton Springs Hospital president and CEO, in a statement.

Eligible employees were offered severance packages.

The hospital worked with a labor management consulting team that compared its workforce with that of 30 similarly sized hospitals.

“That effort produced awareness that our workforce structure needed to be adjusted if we were to maintain a financially sound, full-service hospital with the resources required to invest in future technologies, our staff and the emerging services that will best serve our community in the face of the national and local changes in the health care industry,” Zulick said.

The news comes days after the hospital announced it had replaced longtime CEO John Galati with Zulick in an interim appointment.

Hospital officials said Wednesday there are no plans for an immediate search for a permanent CEO. In addition, Chief Nursing Officer Donna Smith was named to a new position, chief operating officer, and simultaneously will serve in both roles.
Zulick, a general surgeon, who has served as the hospital’s chief medical officer for the past 11 years, plans to continue his surgical practice in the region.

Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic ranked 46th on the most recent Rochester Business Journal list of private-sector employers with 475 employees.
