By JAMES LEUNK
Non-profit Report - 2/8/2013

Theatre Young Kids Enjoy Inc. was founded in 2004 to entertain children, their families and school groups with best-loved bedtime stories, fairy tales and literature presented on stage by professional adult actors. TYKEs' mission is to inspire an appreciation of the arts and foster an awareness of literature in children, promote communication and social skills and teach important life lessons.

Now in its ninth season, TYKEs presents shows in the 288-seat Hart Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, 1200 Edgewood Ave. in Brighton. This year, it also has a production that tours throughout Upstate New York. The organization strives to make its performances accessible to all children regardless of ability to pay.

TYKEs' current season includes these shows:

For each of those shows, a study guide is available for teachers who want to incorporate it into the classroom curriculum when their students attend the production.

TYKEs is offering two more shows this month that give local children opportunities to participate. In its seventh annual partnership with Missoula Children's Theatre of Montana, 120 children-60 in each show-rehearse with visiting professionals and perform in a show-in-a-week format. The children prepare after school, Monday through Friday, and perform a full-scale musical on Saturday, complete with sets, costumes, props and makeup. Those productions:

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," with performances Feb. 9.

"Blackbeard the Pirate," with performances Feb. 16.

TYKEs has one employee, Executive Director Freyda Schneider. She and board member Gina Donahue are the organization's co-founders. The office is at 9 Tuxford Road, Pittsford, and the website is www.tykestheatre.org.
