TechRadar.com, a leading technology product review website, has named Vuzix Corp.’s M100 augmented reality display to its list of the “8 best augmented reality headsets.”
The M100 has a built-in color display and runs on the Android system in conjunction with a smartphone. The headset can be used for global positioning systems, taking photos, recording video and more.
Vuzix CEO Paul Travers has said the M100 will be one of Vuzix’s most important products going forward, as the Henrietta-based seller of video eyewear seeks more financing for the commercial launch of its augmented reality products.
The M100 ranked No.2 on TechRadar’s list. Google Inc.’s Google Glass Explorer Edition ranked No.1. Other products from companies like Sony Corp., Oakley Inc. and Japanese-based Seiko Epson Corp. also made the list.
Google appears to be the biggest competitor for Vuzix in the augmented reality headset market. The two companies’ products have been compared by several technology blogs and websites, and Google has received a lot of media attention.
While Google has not set a specific release date for its Explorer Edition, Vuzix said the M100 will be available this summer.
“Since the M100 runs native Android apps as well as being capable of running full blown AR apps directly in the glasses, the M100 is ready for full-scale launch this summer,” said Travers, in a statement. “Ahead of that launch, we are pleased that our product is receiving recognition and praise from the tech community including developers, the media, and the Consumer Electronics Show where it won the 2013 CES Innovations Award for smartphone accessories.”
