Schumer: Samuelsohn seeks to buy Hickey Freeman

High-end Canadian suitmaker Samuelsohn is trying to buy Rochester’s Hickey Freeman and bring new lines of business to the North Clinton Street company, Sen. Charles Schumer said Wednesday.

Current owner Authentic Brands Group LLC in New York City would license the Hickey Freeman brand to Samuelsohn, Schumer said of the pending deal. Samuelson would then bring the Rochester plant back to capacity, he said.

Schumer, D-N.Y., said he has spoken with Samuelsohn co-owner and CEO Stephen Granovsky and thinks the potential deal would be good for Hickey Freeman.

“While this deal is not yet finalized, I am optimistic that with the workers, the union and the companies behind them, Hickey Freeman’s facility, brand and workforce will be strengthened by Samuelsohn’s proposed purchase,” Schumer said in a statement.

Samuelson, founded in 1923, has its headquarters in Montreal, with a showroom in New York City.

An acquisition by Samuelsohn would add more work to Hickey Freeman, stabilize its 350 union workers and create additional jobs, Schumer said.

Authentic Brands purchased HMX Acquisition Corp., including Hickey Freeman and Hart Schaffner & Marx, last December.
