DOT guarantees $15 million in funding for train station

Federal funding of $15 million for Rochester’s new train station has been guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, with the contract for final design and construction to be awarded this fall, officials announced Thursday.

The $26.5 million project has met the DOT’s requirements for the loan guaranty, allowing the $15 million to be allocated permanently, officials said.

“Today’s announcement is a big step forward towards a landmark transportation center for Rochester,” Mayor Thomas Richards said.

“Now that we have reached the next step with this project, we look forward to the jobs that will be created when this new gateway to Rochester and downtown is being constructed.”

The city managed the preliminary project scoping and public comment process, which positioned the city to apply successfully for the discretionary grant from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery III program.

The project is getting $7.5 million in state funding and $500,000 from the city.

The intermodal station will displace the existing station Central Avenue. It will be owned and operated by the National Passenger Railroad Corp., commonly known as Amtrak.
