Thermal Gradient Inc. has graduated from its status as an incubation-phase startup business resident at High Tech Rochester Inc.’s Rochester BioVenture Center, officials said.
The Rochester-based biotechnology company develops devices and systems for rapid, easy-to-use molecular diagnostic systems for use in health care, biomedical research, environmental safety and other related fields.
The company goal is to become a strategic development partner for the molecular diagnostic industry — which provides specialized testing equipment for clinical laboratories used in hospitals for diagnostic testing. Thermal Gradient has four issued and three pending patents for its core technology.
Thermal Gradient recently signed an agreement with Axela Inc. of Toronto, Canada to integrate its “Ultra Fast PCR” technology with Axela’s products for creation of a new, simplified and rapid molecular diagnostic system. The company is in discussions with other firms desiring access to Thermal Gradient's technology.
“Thermal Gradient is an outstanding example of an entrepreneurial venture that addresses a rapidly growing market through innovative technology,” says Mike Riedlinger, HTR’s director of the Rochester BioVenture Center, in a statement. “The path from their first concepts to the validation they have now received in the market had many twists and turns, yet through the years they persisted, solving daunting technical problems and dealing with a myriad of business issues.”
Thermal Gradient was also a recent recipient of a multi-year grant from the National Institutes of Health for the continuing development of its HIV diagnostic system.
Even though it has advanced beyond the startup stage, Thermal Gradient will continue to use space at the incubator, which offers wet lab capabilities to its clients and tenants. Plans for expansion include hiring additional engineering and development staff.
The company currently is recruiting for mechanical and electrical engineers as well as a molecular biologist.
