UR reappoints Seligman as president

Joel Seligman has been reappointed as president of the University of Rochester.

The UR board of trustees voted to extend the term of Seligman, who joined UR in 2004. Presidents at the University of Rochester serve indefinite terms at the pleasure of the board and are reviewed typically every five years, the university noted. Seligman's last review took place in 2009-10.

"We did a thorough review," said Trustee Thomas Sloan, who served as chairman of the most recent reappointment committee. "We talked with trustees, university officers and student leaders, and we surveyed the faculty. The results were overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic. People appreciate the job Joel has done in providing vision, injecting incredible energy and in communicating openly with all the university's constituents."

Sloan cited UR's progress under Seligman in key areas. Those areas include using strategic planning to set priorities, enhancing the quality of faculty and students, and strengthening the university's infrastructure. Seligman also has created a strong advancement operation and fundraising campaign, enhanced the university's reputation and focused on creating a more diverse and inclusive community, Sloan added.

"This is a truly excellent record of accomplishment," Chairman Edmund Hajim said. "I look forward to working with Joel as we tackle the challenges in the days ahead."

Seligman said he is gratified by the board's vote for his reappointment.

"I look forward to working further with the board, our leadership, faculty, staff, students and alumni to build an ever better University of Rochester in the years to come," he said.
