Fibertech Networks LLC has activated an outdoor metro small cell site for a wireless carrier carrying commercial traffic. It is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, officials said.
"There has been a tremendous amount of press and speculation in the wireless segment about small cell, and the potential explosion of wireless carrier’s deployment of this technology, but until now it has been limited to planning discussions and internal testing,” said Michael Hurley, vice president of sales and marketing, in a statement.
The recently completed installation was its customer’s first small cell to carry live commercial traffic, Hurley said. It demonstrates Fibertech abilities in the growing technology.
The fiber-optic network company has a significant position in the wireless sector and has built out fiber to thousands of cell towers throughout the 11 states in which it operates, Fibertech officials said.
The company expects small cell installations will be an important part of a wireless carrier’s business solutions to create a strong broadband network reach.
Fibertech, which recently expanded into Detroit, also also has networks operational in Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, Binghamton, Syracuse and White Plains; Philadelphia and Pittsburgh; Indianapolis; Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo, Ohio; Providence, R.I.; Hartford, Bridgeport, Stamford, Danbury, New London and New Haven, Conn.; Springfield and Worcester, Mass.; Dover and Wilmington, Del; Montgomery County, Md.; and Atlantic City, Newark and Trenton, N.J.
