Commercial printer Evolution Impressions shuts down

By VELVET SPICER - 6/2/2014

Commercial printer Evolution Impressions Inc. and its sister company Evolution Events Online Inc. have shut their doors.

President and CEO Thomas Gruber confirmed the company had closed but declined to discuss details. It is the second commercial printer in Rochester to close this year. In April Monroe Litho Inc. quietly closed its Delevan Street facility.

With some 30 full-time, local employees, Evolution Impressions ranked eighth on the most recent Rochester Business Journal list of commercial printers. That was down from 46 employees the previous year.

The company got its start in 2002 when Monroe Graphics Inc. was sold to a local group of private investors and renamed Evolution Impressions. Earlier that year Monroe Graphics had received a $565,600 Small Business Administration economic injury loan related to the Sept. 11 disaster.

At the time it had 88 employees and had logged $8 million in sales in 2001.

Gruber previously served as chairman, president and CEO of Monroe Graphics. A 1997 RBJ profile on the company noted he joined the firm that year as a consultant hired to revitalize the ailing firm.

Prior to its closing, Evolution Impressions offered print production of signage, posters, brochures and annual reports, among other things. The company also provided event management services, data management, Smartphone apps and online fulfillment.
